Disaster Recovery

A backup copy of your phone system, kept in a separate physical location or region, can automatically take over if your primary location experiences a major outage — a power failure, an internet outage, a fire, a flood — so your business stays reachable even when the building isn’t.

How is this different from a simple backup server?

A basic hot-standby setup (see High Availability & Hot Standby) protects you if one server fails, but if both the primary and its local backup are in the same building, a site-wide event takes both down together. Disaster recovery specifically places the backup somewhere geographically separate, so a problem at one location doesn’t touch the other.

How quickly does it detect and respond to an outage?

The system continuously monitors the health of the primary location. If it stops responding, the geographically separate backup automatically picks up operations, typically with no data loss and minimal service interruption. You’ll receive an instant notification by call and email the moment a failover (see Glossary) happens.

Is this only relevant for large enterprises?

No. Any business where phone downtime directly costs money or damages customer trust — a call center, a dispatch operation, a medical office, a professional services firm — benefits from disaster recovery. The scale of the backup infrastructure can be sized to match your business, not just enterprise deployments.

What connects the two locations securely?

The primary and backup locations communicate over an encrypted, secure connection (a site-to-site tunnel), so configuration and call data can replicate between them without exposing that traffic to the open internet.

Does this require a second physical location I have to manage myself?

No — the redundancy server can be hosted for you rather than requiring your own second site, so you get the protection without having to stand up and maintain a second facility yourself.
