“Press 0” Escape from Voicemail

You can configure any voicemail greeting to offer an escape option — typically “press 0” — that immediately pulls the caller out of voicemail and reroutes them to a receptionist, a backup extension, or a department queue, instead of forcing them to leave a message.

01

Why does this matter for customer experience?

Some callers have something urgent that genuinely can’t wait for a callback. Giving them a way out of voicemail — rather than trapping every caller in a recording — signals that a real person is still reachable and prevents a frustrated hang-up.

02

Where does the escaped call go?

Anywhere you choose: a receptionist, a manager’s extension, a department ring group, or a general support queue. You’re not limited to one fixed destination — different mailboxes can route their escape option to different places based on what fits that role.

03

Does this apply to every voicemail box, or is it optional per mailbox?

It’s optional and configurable per mailbox — enable it for customer-facing lines where a live fallback matters most, and leave it off for internal or low-priority extensions where a standard voicemail is perfectly fine.

04

Is this the same as the “escape to a live person” option in the main call menu?

It’s the same underlying idea applied specifically inside voicemail rather than the main phone menu. See Escape to a Live Person for how the equivalent option works in your Auto Attendant (automated phone menu — see Glossary) before a caller ever reaches voicemail.

05

Can this route to a shared team voicemail instead of a live person?

Yes — an escape option doesn’t have to lead to a live answer at all; it can just as easily redirect a caller into a shared department voicemail box if that better fits how your team triages messages.
