E911 for Remote, Hot-Desk & Field Workers
We handle it with dynamic, per-device location updates rather than one fixed address on file. That’s because someone working from home, hot-desking between offices, or calling from a mobile app in the field isn’t reliably in the same place a static office address would suggest. E911 (Enhanced 911 — see Glossary) is what automatically shares a caller’s location with emergency dispatchers.

Why doesn’t standard office-based E911 work for these situations?
Standard Emergency Calling transmits whatever address you’ve registered to an extension. That works perfectly for a fixed desk phone that never moves. It breaks down the moment someone uses the same extension from home one day and a different office the next. The registered address stops reflecting reality.
How does the system get an accurate location for a remote worker?
Depending on the device, we handle this through a registered work-from-home address the employee confirms, or through location detection on the softphone and mobile apps. That location updates automatically as the person’s actual location changes, so a 911 call carries the most accurate location available at that moment.
Does this apply to hot-desking within our own offices too?
Yes — someone who logs their extension into a different shared desk each day (see Hot Desking & Shared Phones) needs their location updated to match whichever desk and office they’re actually sitting at that day, not a single default location for the whole company.
What about someone using a mobile app while out of the office entirely?
Mobile app calls can use the device’s own location services to help route the call to the correct local emergency dispatcher and provide location context. That’s similar to how a standard cell phone call works today.
Is this something we need to actively manage, or does it happen automatically?
There’s an initial setup step to register work-from-home addresses and confirm mobile location settings for remote and field staff. Once configured, though, updates happen automatically as people move, without requiring day-to-day management from your team.
