Direct Inward Dialing (DID) Numbers

A DID (a phone number that rings straight into your system — see Glossary) can go to a specific person, department, menu, or even a marketing campaign. You can route and brand each one completely independently of your main published number.

01

How many DID numbers can a business have?

There’s no meaningful limit tied to the phone system — businesses commonly run anywhere from a handful of numbers up to hundreds, each mapped to its own destination, without needing additional physical phone lines for each one.

02

Does each DID need its own physical line?

No — all your DID numbers can run over the same underlying trunk (the connection to the phone network — see Glossary) and system. The number itself is really a routing address, not a separate wire.

03

Can a DID route straight to a menu or greeting instead of a person?

Yes — see Routing a Published Number Straight to a Menu for how you can point any DID at a specific auto attendant, department, or greeting rather than a single extension.

04

Are DIDs the same as toll-free numbers?

Not necessarily. A DID is typically a local or regional number, while toll-free numbers are a separate category with their own cost structure for the caller. See Local & Toll-Free Numbers for how the two compare.

05

Can we get new DIDs, or only use ones we already own?

Both — you can acquire new DID numbers in the areas you serve, or bring in numbers you already own from a previous provider. See Number Porting for how we move existing numbers over.
