Call Tracking Numbers for Marketing

Dedicated tracking numbers — one per campaign, ad, or webpage — let you see exactly which marketing effort generated each incoming call, all while routing normally into your existing menus, ring groups, or queues like any other number.

01

How does a tracking number actually show us which campaign worked?

Each campaign, print ad, or web page gets its own DID (a phone number that rings straight into your system — see Glossary). When a call comes in on that number, it’s tagged in your reporting with exactly which source it came from, so you can compare call volume across campaigns directly.

02

What is DNI, and do we need it for this to work?

DNI (Dynamic Number Insertion — see Glossary) is a more advanced version specifically for websites: it automatically swaps the phone number displayed on a webpage based on how the visitor arrived — from a specific ad, a specific search term, or a specific referring site — so you can attribute calls down to the individual visitor session, not just the campaign level. It’s an add-on for businesses that want that level of granularity; simple per-campaign tracking numbers don’t require it.

03

Can tracking numbers support A/B testing?

Yes — assign a different number to each version of an ad or landing page you’re testing, and compare call volume between them directly, the same way you’d compare click-through rates on a digital ad.

04

Do tracking numbers behave differently for the caller than a normal number?

No — callers dial and are connected exactly as they would through any other published number. The tracking happens on your side, in reporting, and is invisible to the person calling in.

05

Can we see this data alongside our other call reporting?

Yes — tracking number performance appears alongside your standard call volume, answer rate, and other reporting, and can be exported for use in broader marketing analytics tools. See Data Export & BI Integration for how that export works.
