Barge-In

Barge-in lets a supervisor join a live call directly. Both the agent and the customer can hear and speak with them. It’s for situations that genuinely need a second, more senior voice right now.

When would a business actually use this?

Think of an escalating complaint, a high-value customer asking for a manager, or a new agent who’s clearly out of their depth. In these moments, a supervisor can step in immediately with barge-in. That way, the call doesn’t end badly, and the customer doesn’t sit on hold waiting to be transferred.

How is barge-in different from whisper coaching?

Whisper coaching keeps the supervisor’s voice private, heard only by the agent. It’s for guiding the agent through a call they’re still handling. Barge-in is a direct takeover option instead — the customer hears the supervisor too. Use whisper coaching to develop an agent’s skills in the moment. Use barge-in when the situation itself needs a more senior person now.

Does barging in embarrass the agent in front of the customer?

It doesn’t have to. Many supervisors barge in to support rather than override, introducing themselves as backup rather than taking over entirely. How you use it is a management and training question; the tool itself stays neutral.

Can an agent request a supervisor join their call rather than the supervisor deciding on their own?

Typically yes — many teams use a quick internal request (a chat message or a status flag) for an agent to signal they’d like a supervisor to join, in addition to a supervisor proactively choosing to step in based on what they observe via live call monitoring.

Is there a record that a barge-in happened?

When call recording is enabled, we capture the full interaction — including the supervisor’s involvement — as part of the normal recording. That gives you a complete record for quality review afterward.
