Queue Ring Strategies

A ring strategy is the rule that decides which agent’s phone rings next when a queued call is ready to be delivered — see Glossary — and you can pick the one that matches how your team actually works, rather than being stuck with a single default behavior.

01

What ring strategies are available?

Common options include ringing everyone at once (fastest answer, but interrupts the whole team), ringing in a fixed rotation, ringing whoever’s been idle longest, or ringing whoever has answered the fewest calls so far today (to balance workload fairly). You can set a different strategy per queue.

02

Which strategy is right for my business?

It depends on your priority. A small sales team chasing every lead might want “ring all” for the fastest possible pickup. A larger support team usually benefits from “longest idle” or “fewest answered,” which spreads calls evenly and avoids burning out your top performers while others sit quiet.

03

Can the strategy change automatically depending on how busy we are?

Yes — many businesses set a more distributed strategy (like fewest-answered) during normal hours and switch to “ring all” during peak periods or short-staffed shifts, when speed matters more than balance. This ties into the same scheduling logic used elsewhere in the system.

04

Does the ring strategy affect how long a caller waits overall?

It affects who gets offered the call, not how many agents are available — but choosing the right strategy avoids wasted time (like a call ringing an already-busy agent’s phone) and keeps your team responsive. Combine it with Priority Queues & Acceleration to control both who answers and in what order calls are offered.

05

Do agents need to do anything differently based on the ring strategy?

No — ring strategy is invisible to agents day-to-day. They simply answer when their phone rings; the system handles the logic of deciding when that happens.
