Hardware Expansion & Capacity Planning
You don’t have to replace your on-site appliance as your business grows. You can add expansion boards and processing modules to increase how many extensions, phone lines, and simultaneous calls it can handle. That protects the investment you’ve already made in the hardware.

What actually do we add when we expand capacity?
Two kinds of upgrades typically apply. Expansion boards add more physical phone-line ports, for analog lines, digital trunk lines, or cellular connections. Processing modules — a DSP, or Digital Signal Processor (the chip that handles voice audio — see Glossary) — increase how many calls the system can handle at once.
How do I know when it’s time to plan for expansion?
We track your usage as part of ongoing management and flag it before you hit a hard capacity ceiling. That way, expansion is a planned step, not an emergency when a new hire can’t get an extension or calls start getting blocked during busy periods.
Does adding capacity mean downtime for my whole office?
We handle expansion with minimal disruption — typically scheduling it outside business hours specifically to avoid interrupting your team’s calling during the workday.
What if I outgrow the appliance entirely, not just its current expansion limit?
Every hardware tier has a practical ceiling. If your business is projected to outgrow it, we’ll plan a path to a larger appliance tier. Or we can move you to Hosted / Software Edition, which scales further without a hardware ceiling at all.
Is capacity planning something I have to think about myself?
No — this is part of what we handle as your ongoing phone system partner. We monitor usage trends and proactively recommend expansion before capacity becomes a problem, rather than leaving you to notice it yourself.
