Migrating From Your Current Phone System

You can move to a new system while keeping your existing phone numbers, and in most cases your existing desk phones too, with the switch scheduled for a specific date and time so there’s no unplanned gap in service.

01

Will we lose our current phone numbers?

No. You can port your numbers (transfer them from your old provider to the new system — see Glossary), so customers keep dialing the same numbers they always have. See Number Porting for how that process works.

02

Do we have to buy all new desk phones?

Not necessarily. You can reuse many existing desk phone models on the new system rather than replacing them outright. That can meaningfully cut the cost of switching. Where a phone genuinely can’t be reused, we identify it upfront, so there are no surprises.

03

What happens to our old on-premises phone system equipment?

That depends on what you want — some businesses retire and remove old on-site hardware once the new system is live, others keep it temporarily as a fallback during transition. Either way, we address it as part of planning, rather than leaving it as an afterthought.

04

What is a “cutover,” and how disruptive is it?

A cutover (the scheduled moment service switches from your old system to the new one — see Glossary) gets planned in advance for a specific time, often outside business hours. That specifically avoids any gap in incoming or outgoing calls. It’s a planned event, not a surprise.

05

Will our team need training on the new system?

Most employees need very little — day-to-day calling, transferring, and voicemail work intuitively and feel familiar within the first few calls. A short walkthrough is typically enough for most staff, with more focused training available for admins and anyone managing call flows, reporting, or the contact center tools.

06

How does this connect to choosing how we’ll connect to the phone network going forward?

Migration is also the natural point to decide how you’ll connect going forward — see Choosing How You Connect to the Network for the options and trade-offs.
