Forwarding Voicemail to a Backup Extension

You can set any voicemail box to automatically forward a copy of every message to one or more backup extensions (a colleague, a manager, or a shared team box), so a message never lives or dies on one person remembering to check their phone.

01

How many backup extensions can a message forward to?

You can chain forwarding to a second and third extension — for example, a message left for an account manager could also copy their team lead, and then the department manager if it still goes unheard, creating a simple built-in safety net.

02

Does forwarding change who “owns” the original message?

No — the original recipient still gets the voicemail in their own box exactly as before. Forwarding just adds extra people who are notified and can act on it, rather than moving the message away from anyone.

03

Is this useful for vacation coverage or sick days?

Yes — it’s one of the most common uses. Before someone goes on leave, you can point their voicemail at a covering colleague so customer messages keep moving even when that person is fully offline.

04

Does a forwarded voicemail also go to email?

Yes — forwarding works alongside Voicemail-to-Email, so every backup recipient can get an email copy with the audio attached, not just a notification on their desk phone.

05

Can this be combined with a shared department box?

Yes — many businesses forward an individual’s voicemail into their department’s shared box as the backup destination, combining personal ownership with team-wide visibility. See Department & Shared Voicemail Boxes.
