Emergency Calling (E911)

Managed Voice / Extensions & Phone Numbers

Emergency Calling (E911)

E911 (emergency calling that automatically shares your exact location with dispatchers — see Glossary) is built in, so a 911 call from any extension automatically transmits the correct registered address to emergency dispatchers, without the caller needing to state it themselves.

01

How does the system know which address to send?

Every extension, or every location if you have multiple offices, has a registered physical address on file. When a 911 call is placed, that address is transmitted automatically alongside the call, so dispatchers see accurate location information immediately.

02

What happens for a business with more than one office location?

Each location’s extensions are tied to that location’s specific registered address, so a call from your downtown office and a call from your second office across town each correctly report their own address, not a single default for the whole company.

03

Is there anything we need to configure ourselves, or is this automatic once numbers are set up?

Location information needs to be accurately entered and kept up to date, especially any time you move offices, add a location, or reconfigure extensions — the system handles the transmission automatically, but it can only send what’s on file.

04

Does this work the same for people working from home or on the road?

Not automatically — a fixed office address on file doesn’t reflect where a remote or mobile worker actually is at the moment of a call. See E911 for Remote, Hot-Desk & Field Workers for how that’s handled separately.

05

Are there compliance requirements around this we should know about?

Yes — many regions have specific legal requirements (often called Kari’s Law and RAY BAUM’S Act in the US, and similar regulations elsewhere) around direct 911 dialing and location accuracy for business phone systems. This is built to support those requirements, and we’ll walk through the specifics that apply to your jurisdiction during setup.
