Call Parking & Retrieval

Call parking (placing a call on hold in a shared “slot” so anyone else can pick it up from a different phone — see Glossary) lets you park a call in a numbered slot and announce it over the intercom or a shared channel. Then anyone in the building can retrieve it from their own extension just by dialing that slot number.

01

How is parking different from a normal transfer?

A transfer sends a call to a specific destination immediately. Parking is different — it’s more like putting the call “on a shelf” that anyone can retrieve from. That’s useful when you don’t know in advance exactly who should take the call, or when the right person is elsewhere in the building and needs to walk to a phone.

02

What’s a typical use case for this?

Here’s a common one: a receptionist parks a call and pages overhead — “Call for John, parked on slot 2.” John then picks it up from whichever nearby phone is convenient. The receptionist never needs to know exactly where he is.

03

What happens if a parked call is never retrieved?

You set a timeout for this. After a defined period, an unretrieved parked call automatically returns to whoever parked it, or routes to voicemail. That way, nothing sits parked indefinitely and gets forgotten.

04

Does parking require special hardware, like a dedicated parking button?

No. Parking and retrieval work through feature codes or app-based controls, available on any extension, desk phone, or softphone. You don’t need any special physical hardware.

05

How does this relate to hot desking?

They’re commonly used together. You can retrieve a parked call from any shared desk phone, so it pairs naturally with Hot Desking & Shared Phones in environments where people move between desks throughout the day.

Let’s walk through what call parking & retrieval would look like day-to-day.
